Seasonal Officers

History of the Dewey Beach, DE Police Seasonal Officer Program

The Dewey Beach, Delaware, Police Department has operated a seasonal police officer program since 1984. Initially designed to address the specific needs of the community during peak times, this program has evolved significantly over the years to meet the growing demands of both residents and visitors.

Early Years (1984-1990s)

In 1984, the Dewey Beach Police Department established its seasonal police officer program to enhance law enforcement coverage during the busy summer months. During its early years, the program consisted of approximately five officers. The primary role of these seasonal officers was to ensure public safety, manage increased foot traffic, and address the unique challenges posed by the influx of tourists.

Growth and Peak Years (1990s-2000s)

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the seasonal officer program experienced considerable growth. The number of seasonal officers peaked at approximately 35 to 40 officers during this period. This increase was driven by a rise in tourism and the subsequent demand for enhanced law enforcement presence. The expanded force allowed the Dewey Beach Police Department to provide better coverage, respond more effectively to incidents, and maintain a higher level of public safety.

Transition and Reduction (2000s-Present)

As the number of full-time police officers within the Dewey Beach Police Department increased, the reliance on seasonal officers began to shift. This transition led to a gradual reduction in the number of seasonal positions. By the early 2020s, the number of seasonal officers had been reduced to under 15. This adjustment reflected a realignment to balance the department's resources while maintaining an adequate level of seasonal support during peak times.

Training and Development

A critical aspect of the seasonal police officer program is the training that officers undergo. Seasonal officers are required to attend a comprehensive training academy. Dewey Beach police officers staff this academy and includes instruction from several other Delaware-certified police instructors from partner agencies. The training ensures that seasonal officers are well-prepared to handle the specific demands of their roles.

Current Status (2024)

In the fall of 2024, five seasonal police officers from Dewey Beach are enrolled in the Delaware State Police and Dover Police Academies. This ongoing training is a testament to the program's commitment to maintaining high standards of law enforcement and ensuring that officers are fully equipped to serve the community effectively.

The officers trained this year have been hired by the Dewey Beach Police Department, South Bethany Police Department, and the Delaware State Police, reflecting the collaborative efforts of regional law enforcement agencies to ensure comprehensive coverage and support.

Conclusion

The Dewey Beach Police Department's seasonal officer program has undergone significant evolution since its inception in 1984. From its modest beginnings to its peak years and subsequent adjustments, the program has continuously adapted to meet the needs of the community. With a focus on rigorous training and strategic resource management, the seasonal officer program remains a vital component of maintaining public safety in Dewey Beach.
